Pompano Beach Fire Administration/
Emergency Operations Center

Pompano Beach, FL

The foremost challenge to relocate, reinvent, and modernize the infrastructure of the City’s Fire Administration/Emergency Operations Center was its incorporation on an existing public service site, adjacent to Pompano Beach’s Police Headquarters.

The top floor of the three-story, 48,000 SF building features private, secure offices for top fire administration officials, including the fire chief, emergency operations director, chief fire marshal, chaplain, and others. Their individual spaces are designed to accommodate personal needs in the event of a crisis, including sleeping and relaxation quarters.

The floor is shared by the Emergency Operations Center, with glass-fronted meeting rooms to monitor activities easily for command, engineering, planning, operations, and finance departments. In the activation of an emergency, these top personnel can be lodged in six sets of dormitories, each with four beds. This floor features breakout rooms, staff lounge and kitchen area, gym workout space, and flexible space for training and conferences.

The first floor serves the Fire Department logistics department, which orders, warehouses, and distributes supplies throughout the public sector of operations teams. A mezzanine level overlooking logistics storage is readily supplied with ready-to-eat meals, blankets, other on-call emergency equipment, records storage, and fire prevention program brochures, giveaways, and accoutrements.

The lobby offers triple-volume height highlighted by the mezzanine overlook, and affords backdrop space for press conferences. The lobby is further distinguished by a simulated fire training flight of stairs, other fire-fighting paraphernalia, and historic collections.

The three-story, restricted 250-space parking garage is multifunctional and hurricane-resistant, and includes BSO motorcycle storage, and designated parking for fire trucks, backhoes, public works trucks, and complex recovery vehicles on the lofty first floor.

Security-monitored perimeter fencing around the entire public safety campus encloses a fire training tower, Fire Station #63, BSO Police Headquarters, and BSO Fleet Maintenance. A man-made retention lake was partially filled in to add even more to the existing surface parking for the multifunctional property.
